The story I have made here is the story of how America has gained power. With hard work, education, monitoring people and time the government has gained power. The pictures start out by saying how hard the American people have worked. They have worked in factories and got down and dirty to make the next dollar. Education has really helped America become powerful as well. Through later generations the government has monitored their people and with time this has given them power. I thought about it for a while and I really can not come up with any other argument with a different organization of the pictures. It took my a while just to come up with this story. I think if the Star Spangled Banner song was played with these pictures on a slide show it would really add emphasis to the story.
I have posted the song, try playing it.
When I listen to the song and get to the last picture I really feel the emphasis. Does anyone else agree?
The commercial that I
chose was Value City Furniture commercial about putting old furniture to shame.
The intended audience for this commercial is people who are looking to buy new
and upgraded furniture. The opinion that the target audience holds is that old
furniture is bad to look at, which is why they want to get new furniture. The
company does appeal to these opinions because they understand that people get
bored with old furniture. The company wants to make the audience have a laugh
about it. There is no way you can watch this commercial without laughing. The
company exaggerates the way you feel when you look at your old furniture;
probably not many people really gag when they look at furniture.
A social connotation
within the text is that if your friends come over and see your old furniture it
may make them grossed out. As I read through some of the comments on the
YouTube page I found that many people absolutely loved the commercial and many
people did not. The reasons that people did not like it was because they find
gagging noises disgusting, but that adds humor to the video. Clearly, the couple exaggerates the gagging noises. The company is
trying to tell you that old furniture is gag worthy and you should upgrade. A
cultural connotation could possibly be that anyone can afford this furniture.
The couple looks to have a middle class house, not a rich and fancy house. They
have typical clothing on and look typical, so typical people can afford from
Value City Furniture.
The greatest phrase is “it
really puts the old furniture to shame.” This is even the title of the
commercial. The colors are bright and welcoming. I think the biggest color noted
is the difference between the home vs. the old coffee table. The old coffee
table is bland and dull in color, which makes everything else about the house
stick out. The main picture is a couple in their family room. The technology
that is used is aural or the sounds coming from the two actors. Also noted to
the bottom right corner is the emblem of the company.
The goal intended is to
make the audience realize that they need to upgrade their furniture. They want
you to buy more furniture than what you originally thought. The couple bought a
new couch because they must have thought they needed an upgrade. Once they got
home they realized how old their other furniture looks. The goal is to make you
realize that you actually need more than just one new piece of furniture.
After reading through the
comments the commercial can go either way depending on the type of person who
see’s it. Some people comment that they would shop here just because of the
commercial being so funny, but others disagreed. I think the goal was achieved.
I just recently bought a new couch (not from Value City Furniture) and when it
got in the house I realized I needed a new TV stand because the current one
looks outdated next to the new couch. I believe that the gagging noises can
help but also hinder depending on the viewer. Some people do not like gagging
noises so this commercial would push away that specific audience, while others
think its humorous making that audience continue to watch.
This photo was taken when
I was visiting a friend in Santa Barbara, CA. It was such a beautiful day and I took the picture so I could remember the view we had from our hotel.
I believe the audience of this photo would be someone who loves the ocean. It
would be someone who loves to feel sand between their toes and loves the warm
breeze on their skin. I also think of someone who loves to relax. This beach
looks relaxing and quiet.
For some reason when I put
the picture into black and white I immediately thought of the 1940’s or 50’s. I
also think it takes away from the point of the picture. The point of the
picture is to capture the beautiful color of the ocean, the sand, the palm
trees and the blue sky. I don’t think of a relaxing beach when I see it in
black and white. I believe color really makes this picture such a beautiful
piece of art. I think it would change the audience. I think it attracts a more emotional
audience. I don’t really think of happiness when I see the picture in black and
white. When I saw it in color I was excited and wanted to go to the beach right
now.
While the picture is in color the title that I would give is
“Relax." I think this title works perfect for this picture because it is all
about relaxing at the beach. I believe this title would change the audience
into knowing it’s a relaxing place. When you see the word relax and a picture
of the beach you almost already feel relaxed, but my favorite place is the
beach. J
My meme is about how I am a wound care
nurse. I really enjoyed exploring what my friends, husband and society think I
do. The way I figured each picture was asking different people what they
believe I do on a daily basis.
My non-medical friends think that I put
Band-Aids on people all day. This has some truth to it. Many people can heal
their wounds on their own, so I simply cover it with foam dressing (Band-Aid). The second picture is focused on what
my husband thinks I do. It seems like every time my husband calls me I am
either on break or charting. He thinks my job is very easy.
The next picture is how society views
nurses not by any specialty; they usually remember the old fashioned white
hats. The next picture about my boss was chosen because whenever my boss tries
to talk with me I seem to be on my lunch break.
The fifth picture is what I think I do.
I picture myself in a crazy surgery helping doctors while the patient starts to
bleed everywhere. The final picture is what I really do which is putting
negative pressure dressings on frequently. I chose the text because they each
seemed appropriate for a meme. I learned how people view what I do and how hard
they think I work. It was fun finding out what people think about wound nurses.
